Great Mosque of Xi’an

Great Mosque of Xi’an

Great Mosque of Xi’an is situated in northwest of the Drum Tower. It was originally built in Tang Dynasty (742 AD) with more than 1,200 years' history. Due to its magnificent scale, it is known as the “Great” Mosque, which covers an area of about 13,000 square meters, and is divided into four courtyards.

Unlike most mosques in Middle East or Arab countries, the Great Mosque of Xi'an has integrated Chinese traditional features with Islamic architectural styles without any domes or traditional-style minarets. It emphasizes Chinese traditional buildings and the Islamic mosque arrangements&decorations with Arabic carvings. Due to these features, the Great Mosque of Xi'an has become the most featured and renowned mosque in China. The Honored Prayer Hall, Worship Hall, Shengxin Lou and Phoenix Pavilion are the must-sees in the mosque. In addition, the Great Mosque houses the Koran, the Mecca Picture, and some ancient furniture as well as statuary brick art.
