People’s Square

People’s Square

Centering the politics, culture, economy, transport and tourism, People's Square is a spectacular space in the heart of the city and hailed as Green Lung of the Shanghai city. In a broad sense, People’s Square is composed of an opening square, People's Park and some neighboring cultural, tourism and commercial buildings. It covers 140,000 square meter and can hold over 1,200,000 people. People's Square was formed after Shanghai opened as a port in 1843. It was once a famous racing place for the upper class, which then developed to be a public marketplace.

People’s Square is embraced by Shanghai Museum, Municipal Hall, Shanghai Grant Theater, and Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Center. In the centre there is a musical fountain. The 100-meter-wide avenue traverses the square from the west to the east.

The square offers unusual and impressive views of the city. The panorama of the city from the square, while not the picture postcard image of Shanghai's Bund, is arguably, the most accurate image which reflects the changing nature of this sophisticated and modern city.
