White Pagoda Hill Park

White Pagoda Hill Park

Located on the northern bank of Yellow River in the north of Lanzhou City, the White Pagoda Hill Park is famous for its octangular, seven-storey White Pagoda, with a height of 17 meters. It is a pure white building regardless ofr its green top, which greatly enhances the glamour of the whole building. The White Pagoda is also regarded as a landmark of White Pagoda Park, even the Lanzhou City.

Actually, the park gets its name from the White Pagoda Temple on the top of the mountain. The temple was first built in the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368 AD) to commemorate a well-known Tibetan Lama, who died of an illness in Lanzhou on his way to Mongolia as a representative of the leader of Sakyapa in order to meet Genghis Khan (founder of the Yuan Dynasty). The present White Pagoda Temple was mainly rebuilt and expanded in Ming (1368-1644 AD) and Qing (1644-1911 AD) Dynasties.

The White Pagoda Hill Park was opened to public in 1958. With an area of 8,000 square meters, it has three stately and magnificent ancient architectural clusters which are built harmoniously with the surrounding landscape and the White Pagoda Mountain behind. Climbing to the top of the pagoda, visitors can get a bird’s eye view of the entire Lanzhou, the White Pagoda Mountain and the Zhongshan Bridge. Here, the bridge and mountain form a picturesque scene which becomes a symbol of Lanzhou City and also a must-see for travelers. The Park boasts luxuriant forests and ancient buildings in Ming and Qing dynasties, which attracts both local residents and the Westerners.
