Crescent Spring

Crescent Spring

Have you ever seen a perennially limpid lake in an area of desert sand? Here in the south of Dunhuang City, there is Crescent Lake encircled by the Echoing-sand Mountain and it looks like an oasis, offering a miraculous and wonderful spectacle for tourists.

The Crescent Spring gets its name from its crescent-like shape. It stretches 240 meters in length and 39 meters in width, with a depth of 2 meters. The water is so pure and sweet that it looks like an emerald set in the sand. Visitors down from the Echoing-sand Mountain will likely drink from the lake. Though surrounded by sand dunes for hundreds of years, it still gurgles clearly nowadays. Research has shown that the wind here makes the falling sands back to other sides of the mountain, thus the spring is not smothered. It keeps the sand dunes and spring eternally in a harmonious and almost paradoxical existence, which is really a geological wonder.

The Crescent Spring is a spot worth visiting, which is highly appraised as “Unique Scenery in the North of Great Wall”, and listed as National Key Tourist Attractions in China in 1994.
