Taizhao Ancient City

Taizhao Ancient City

Located in Gongbo’gyamda County, Nyingchi Prefecture, Taizhao Ancient City has once been a major business, cultural and fortress center in southeastern Tibet, since it was situated at the crossing point along the ancient tea route, and the middle and east roads of Tang-Tibet ancient road. In recent times, as a tourist spot, it aims to enable tourists to learn about its rich historical and cultural value.

Taizhao Ancient City was originally named "Gyamda," which means in Tibetan the first village of 100 villages; while, it was renamed as "Taizhao" during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911 AD). Legend has it that it was once a prosperous town with a large population, numerous stores, bustling streets and famous temples. No doubt that it stores a large number of historical remains, including the office of the ancient Gongbo’gyamda government, tombs of Qing Dynasty soldiers, and temples for the Han people's War of God and Taras.

On the way to Nyingchi, you will have a chance to experience this ancient town and admire its historical remains.
