Tiger Leaping Gorge

Tiger Leaping Gorge

Tiger Leaping Gorge, one of deepest gorge in China, is located in Yu Long Naxi Autonomous County (former Lijiang Naxi Autonomous County) with an length of around 16 km. It is formed by Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and Zhongdian Snow Mountain (also known as Baha Snow Mountain), elevations of which are 5,596m and 5,396m respectively. The drop height from the top of the mountain to the water surface reaches about 3,700m, and the width between two sides of the river is only 30m. Legend says that in order to escape from a hunter, a tiger jumped across the river at the narrowest point (still 25m wide), hence the name.

This gorge is the most famous and spectacular gorge in Yunnan, it is about 60 km north from Lijiang. Administratively, the river in this area forms the border between Yulong Naxi Autonomous County of Lijiang City (right bank) and Shangri-La County of Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture (left bank).
