Shanghai Museum

Shanghai Museum

Shanghai Museum was founded and first opened to the public in the building previously of the horseracing club at Nanjing Road in 1952 and then moved into the former Zhonghui Building at Henan Road in 1959. In 1992, the Shanghai municipal government allocated a piece of land to the Museum at the center of the city, the People's Square, as its new site. The construction finished three years later. Formed by eleven galleries and three special temporary exhibition halls, the new building is 29.5 meters in height and has a construction space of 39,200 square meters. The unique architectural form of a round top with a square base is used, symbolizing the ancient Chinese philosophy that the square earth is under the round sky.

Shanghai Museum has been in a fast development process in acquisition, conservation, research, exhibition, education and cultural exchanges, and now possesses a collection of over 1,000,000 objects, about 120,000 of which are precious national-graded works of art. Its rich and high-quality collection of ancient Chinese bronze, ceramics, painting and calligraphy is specially celebrated in the world.
